From Abrams & Chronicle Books we received “Vive Le Color -Afrika- coloring book” for which we thank them.
Information that can be found on the internet: Whether you want to unplug completely or be creatively engaged while watching TV or hanging out with friends, these lap-friendly little colouring books are filled with exquisite artwork and are perfectly formatted for colouring everywhere.
This little book has a nice size. You can fold the cover backwards so you can easily take the color pictures out of the book. The white paper feels thick to the touch. The drawings are varied but they all have an African theme. There are animals, patterns, people, masks and a lot more.
Let me show you some examples:
I colored my first picture with Staedtler fineliners and used Caran d’Ache Neo II for the background. This is a wax pencil that is water soluble. The fineliner performs well on the paper. It does not bleed through but that would not have been a problem anyhow since the pages are all printed single sided. The wax pastel performs well on the paper too but when you add water the paper starts to bubble severely. And after it’s dried it stays that way.
My second picture I colored in with Marco Raffine colored pencils. Here too I used Caran d’Ache Neo II for the background. The pencils perform well on the paper and the wax pencils have the same effect on the paper as they did with the previous picture. The paper starts to bubble and this does not go away.
Conclusion: a very nice book with an African theme. Ranging from masks, patterns, people and animals, it’s all there and you can really enjoy yourself. The background is rather even and there is space to color this in according to your own liking. I did this and I find that it gives a little extra to the picture. The colored pencils and the fineliners perform well on the paper. I also tested a small area with alcohol based markers which do not bleed through the lines but tend to leave stripes and therefore it’s not really good looking. I would not recommend using water. The paper sucks the water up which makes for bubbling of the paper and this stays this way after drying. But that does not alter the fact that this is a nice book to add to your collection.
