When I reveived this book I started paging through it at once. I really like “Enchanted Forest” (“Het Betoverde Woud” in dutch) which is my favorite book by Johanna Basford. The cover looks lovely with the gold ink that is used for printing. It gives you the feeling of holding a quality product in your hands. The paper is nice and thick, it almost feels like cardboard. You can easily flip the book open and it stays flat when opened because the front cover is separated from the rest of the book. The pages are removable which I tried because it is so much more convenient when coloring. The removal was somewhat hard to do, it rather stuck to the binding. I was afraid of crumbling the page but in the end it came out fine. There are some gorgeous images in this book. I will show a few examples.
As you can see from the examples shown here these pictures are chosen with care and I think they are the most popular ones.
I started coloring with felt tip pens and picked the Staedtler Triplus Color felt tips together with the Stabilo 68. Both did very well on this paper. The ink dried quickly and because of this there was never any smudging when you brushed it with your hand by accident. The colors are realistic and there is, due to the thick paper absolutely no bleeding through. Therefore I am very satisfied with my picture.
After this I colored with colored pencils. I tested the Faber Castell Polychromos, Caran d’Ache Pablo and the Koh-I-Noor Polycolors. These last ones I found less pleasant when working on this paper. They went not as smoothly as the other ones and it felt like the paper did not pick up the pigment that well. The other brands did very well on this paper which is all in all very suitable for colored pencils. I also tested a blender pencil. The black lines did rub off however quite a bit when they got touched by the blender pencil by accident. As it was not really necessary for this picture I therefore avoided using a blender pencil.
Conclusion: This book is once more a quality product by Laurence King Publishing. The images are carefully chosen and the thick quality paper makes for excellent coloring with felt tip pens. The taking out of a page went with some difficulty but it went well in the end. If you like Johanna Basfords style then this book really should not be lacking in your collection.
