First we will show you some examples to give you an idea about the content of the book:
I started out by flipping through the book to look at the various drawings. What struck me immediately was the fact that some pictures are printed very thick and others very thin. In my opinion they should have been printed all the same.
The book consists of chapters. Every designer has his/her own chapter. And on the first page of each chapter you will find the name of the illustrator and some of his/her designs. Furthermore you will find website- and social media addresses here when available.
The paper feels very thin so I’m curious what will happen during the colouring. Fortunately the pages are printed one-sided, so the pressing through shouldn’t be to much of a problem.
I chose a drawing from chapter 4 by Karim Benyagoub, and started colouring with the Staedler triplus fineliners. The paper is indeed very thin and the pressing through is rather firm. Just to be on the safe side I would place a loose sheet of paper behind the drawing to prevent the ink from touching the next page. The colours dry out beautifully however and it looks like the ink is laying on the paper. A very special effect. The fineliners coloured nicely and went over the paper smoothly.
After this I was curious what effect coloured pencils would have. For this I chose a design from chapter 8 by Fafahé.I coloured this design with Faber Castell Polychromos. These pencils also coloured nicely and went over the paper smoothly. Even with low pressure there was enough colour issued. The blending of two colours went very easy.
Conclusion: The paper is very thin, but due to the fact that the pages are printed one-sided, this is not a problem. But when using felt-tips I would recommend putting a loose sheet between the pages just to be on the safe side. The colour reproduction is very good with the colouring pencils as well as the felt-tips. Dispite the thin sheets it colours really nice.
