From Pavilion books we received this beautiful book for writing a review about. We want to thank Pavilion very much for this.
Information you can find on the internet about this book: A colouring book to keep and treasure forever. The wonderful illustrations from Millie Marotta’s Tropical Wonderland are reproduced here on the thickest paper yet (180 gsm) on one side only, including 13 gatefolds and with five additional prints that can be pulled out of an envelope at the back of the book. These prints are ideal for framing.
This is an edition for all Millie fans and even those new to her work who want something special to record their creative colouring and drawing or indeed just a beautiful collection of illustrations.
The book is linen bound with screenprinted illustrations and foiling that add a new dimension to Millie’s work. It is, quite simply, a beautiful book.
I’ve seen a lot of colouring books but this one is a beautiful, luxurious version for sure. You can tell that the utmost care has been given to every detail. Nice, firm cover but bound in a way that the pages can be opened just fine. Most colourists know the colouring books from Millie Marotta, but this luxurious version is highy recommended. I will share my first impression with you by showing you some examples.
As you can see in the examples above the book contains expandable designs. These are also printed one-sided. A really nice incidental. This enables you to use a lot of materials and you don’t have to worry about the pressing through on the backside. The designs display different tropical plants and animals from all over the world, as we know from her other books. On top of that there are five loose designs in the back of the book. These sit in a seperate envelope attached to the book.
After scrolling the book my first design caught my eye. I coloured this one with the Derwent colorsoft pencils. Despite the book being very thick, you can colour just fine, even in the inseam. You just can’t say anything bad about the paper. It colours superb. The pencils slide over the paper and the pigment attaches well. Even when putting multiple layers on top of each other, nothing happens to the paper. It really is a joy colouring in this book. Quality makes a difference for sure.
I didn’t choose my next design for testing from the book but I picked a loose design. This is one of the five designs that are in the added envelope in the back. I can give this one as a present or put it in a frame afterwards.
I coloured this butterfly using Kuretake brush pens and some Tombow ABT brushes. Again you feel the quality of the paper very well. The paper doesn’t granulate, doesn’t bulge and the ink runs beautifully. Pressing through is out of the question with these brushpens. If you want to use alcohol markers, you better put a piece of cardboard between the pages, just to make sure.
My conclusion can be described in one word : “Brilliant” !
The cover, the paper and the binding of this book are all perfect. The book may be a bit more expensive than others, but it is really worth it in my opinion. You will have a beautiful, luxurious and firm book with designs in your cabinet when you have finished colouring them all. The “Millie-fans” (as am I) will have a feast.
A lot of extra’s have been processed. Just the quality of the paper itself will give you hours of colouring fun. I can only say that when you ever want a really nice colouring book, this one is a definate must have.
