From Meg Cowley we received the book The Exotic colouring book for writing a review about. We want to thank Meg Cowley very much for this.
Information you can find on the internet: Colour in and save the world with The Exotic Colouring Book, a colouring book like no other. £1* from every copy of The Exotic Colouring Book and its companion books (in any worldwide territory) is donated to World Land Trust (www.worldlandtrust.org). Our donations will fund their ‘Buy an Acre’ program, where every £100 will fund the purchase of an acre of threatened rainforest in Mexico, Argentina and Ecuador. This means that every 100 books sold will ensure an acre of land – and all the species that occupy it – is protected for future generations. The Exotic Colouring Book showcases species from around the world. Some are familiar, and some less so, but they all have one thing in common: they are endangered. The thirty detailed illustrations are waiting for you to bring them to life with colour! When inspiration strikes, you can add in your own doodles and drawings wherever you’d like. This book is for colourists of all ages to enjoy – including adults. After all, colouring shouldn’t just be for kids – grownups need to have fun too! Find out more at www.megcowley.com
De cover of the book appeals to me right away, and because of the manageable size it’s also a nice size for colouring. On the cover you can clearly see that you are supporting World Land Trust too. The World Land Trust makes sure that the rainforests are preserved. And that endangered animals keep their natural habitat to live in and prevent them from getting extinct. From every book sold £1,- is donated to this organization. So by buying this book you also contribute to saving the rainforests.
Now back to the book. It contains 30 designs of animals that are endangered. So the designs match the charity to which the book is connected very well too. I will show you some examples from the book first.
What comes to notice right away when opening the book is the extra information about the charity and a nice introduction of Meg Cowely herself. You will even find a testpage. I think this is a really good thing. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen the question of pens pressing through, and can you use this or that material for colouring? You can test this now yourself on this testpage, a really convenient thing.
Of course I tested what I thought of the paper when colouring on it. I started colouring a design with colouring pencils. I chose the Faber Castell Polychromos. The pencils coloured very nicely on the paper. The pigment attached to the paper very well and, even without adapting it afterwards, I’m very happy with the result.
Next I coloured a design using felt-tips. I chose the Faber Castell Pitt Artist pen Brush. The pressing through of the pens was minimal, which isn’t a problem here at all, because the pages are printed on one side only. On the backside there is some text however, describing the animal you are colouring. This is very handy off course, when you want to colour the animal as natural as possible. I chose to use fantasy colours on this design. The ink of these pens stayed in place nicely, and despite of them being a little moist, you have no problems with bulging or anything like that. Therefore I’m very pleased with this design.
Conclusion : This book was thought about. Meg Cowley wants to support the World Land Trust with the Exotic colouring series (there are also notebooks and diaries available) and adapted the designs to the theme, by drawing animals that are endangered. What I find very handy is the testpage at the beginning of the book. You can test your pens there to your heart’s content to see whether they press through or run. I also tested alcohol markers for example to see whether they would bleed or not. This wasn’t the case though, so I will be using alcohol markers on another design for sure. I can only praise this book. Do you like colouring animals and do you want to support a charity at the same time ? Then this book is a must have for your collection.
